‘London’ Stansted airport is only in London in the same sense that Newark airport is in New York, but it does have one very significant redeeming feature – Stansted is a hub for Ryanair, the airline so cheap I wonder how it stays aloft. Ryanair’s adverts are very seductive (especially when standing in a Tube station waiting for a train to arrive) and on impulse my girlfriend and I grabbed two tickets for a day trip to Ireland during one of their ‘free’ ticket sales

Half the Fun: Getting There by Small Plane in Africa and Elsewhere

It was quite a cute little plane. Gleaming in the sun on the tarmac, it looked quite harmless, and even rather pretty with its shiny coat of pale yellow and white paint. The metal bits were reassuringly rust-free, the two leather seats gleamed, and the windscreen sparkled in the sunlight. The pilot, Dan (a nice, solid name for a pilot) was asking for volunteers to take the plunge – though that was probably not the best choice of metaphor when talking to a group of small-plane virgins about their first flight in something that was not built by Boeing or Airbus

Travels From My Doorstep: The Subtle Joys of Being a Tourist at Home

Over Easter I spent a week in London with my mum. We did all the usual tourist things – strolling through Westminster Abbey and the Tower of London, attending the changing of the guard, and visiting lots of museums, and having a traditional afternoon tea. Eschewing the usual five-star hotel approach, we stayed in a lovely Victorian flat in green and leafy Fulham with all the comforts of home – which makes perfect sense as it was my home....
