The Filadelfia Coffee Resort and Spa http://www.rdaltoncoffee.com/5_1_hotel.html was the best choice we could have made for our recent brief stops in Antigua, Guatemala.

We wanted some flexibility as we intended spending most of our holiday out at Lake Atitlan at Casa Palopo. Thanks to Jim Sanchez at LL, we were able to split the three night package, thereby allowing us a respite of one night “in” and two nights “out” on the drive to and from Santa Catarina Palopo.

Filadelfia gives feeling of a “small” hotel; even though it has twenty rooms/suites (many of the older B&Bs and small inns in Antigua only have three or four rooms). It is constructed adjacent to the functioning coffee processing plant of R. Dalton and Company and is situated at the foot of one of the mountain sides used for coffee cultivation.

<img alt="R. Dalton Coffee Processing" border="0" title="R. How nice to have a working fireplace and someone to come and build a fire, simply by calling the front desk. How nice to have motorized privacy shutters covering the entrance/exit to you private terrace or patio (when the shutter are closed – it is totally dark in your space, regarding of exterior light conditions).

Enjoy your breakfast at the hotel (it is included with your room), but save your evening dining experiences for several of the interesting restaurants in the center of Antigua such as Nicolas http://www.nicolas.com.gt/ and La Fonda de la Calle Real (very vegetarian friendly and there are three locations in Antigua and we liked the one at (5a Avenida Norte N.5)...... heck, you might even want a few hits on a HOOKAH at Gaia to wrap your evening…..we stuck with Turkish Coffee, but the sweet aromas wafting from the hookahs could have been substances other than blended tobacco!

Consider The Mezcal Bar or Bo's Tequila Bar, it goes by both names and is located in the back of Café No Sé. Almost anyone in Antigua can tell you how to find this place, just by asking for No Sé. It’s fun for an hour or two sipping some tequila or mezcal and watching and listening to the Spanish school students making less and less sense in either language after indulging in a few rounds of drinks with new friends.

We had originally considered staying at the Casa Santo Domingo…..a beautifully restored and historic property……but, for us, it proved to be too big, too crowded, too commercial, and crawling with too many groups and outside tourist wandering about the common areas!

Yet, a visit to the hotel is a must…. see the exhibition at the Art Museum (which occupies the same grounds), entitled Pre-Columbian Art and Modern Glass – Art and Beauty in Earthenware, Stone and Glass. The exhibition is thoughtfully curated, and is a comparative relationship between an archaeological collection and one of modern glass…..intriguing!

We are also appreciative recommendation from bonniejoy03, another VIP Community member, who suggested we use the services of Elizabeth Bell for a walking tour of Antigua. Elizabeth proved to be a true gem in every sense and added so much to the understanding of the “good” and “bad” times in the history of the city. She has waged a 40+ year campaign to keep as much of Antigua’s history in tact as possible, without monetary support from the government.

Unlike some observations we have noticed at other Internet travel site postings, we found the Filadelfia staff extremely friendly (especially Gabby and Sofia at the front desk), quiet efficient and most willing to assist in making any arrangements. Our massages were scheduled and given at the times and in the manners we requested. Our tours and transportation were always on time….usually several minutes early to the appointed time, in fact.
While staying at or visiting the Filadelfia, consider signing up for the coffee tour….interesting and educational as well. Challenge yourself to the zip lines on the Canyon Express….especially the last two adrenalin pumping cables across the deepest part of the canyon.

Hop on one of the imported Texas mules at the Filadelfia stables and wander up the paths for some impressive views of downtown Antigua and the surrounding volcanoes.

How much did we really like the Filadelfia....enough to bid on and win another Mystery Auction on LuxuryLink.com (containing clues about the Filadelfia). We have already booked another five day visit before the end of this Summer!

stumbled across your blog while searching for Antigua, are you a travel writer? these photographs are better than those on the hotel website.

Dani, thank you for visiting and reading my blog.

Well, yes, I do travel and I do write, but I am not a travel writer. Too much of my travel is for business and too little for leisure, but I try to tack on a bit of bleisure here and there.

Rather than sit in airports and watch CNN between flights, I would prefer to pound away on a tome or two.....mostly for my own amusement, but hopefully to share some information with others.

I don't go many places without one or more of my cameras. I often see things I want to remember "in the moment," and the camera allows me to capture the visual essence.

Only a few "family" photos here and there...just the minimum needed to document events. Most of my images have personal meaning and probably most are not worth sharing with others.

Hi O. Great post on Antigua and Hotel Filadefia. I wish I had the opportunity to stay there. You really captured the essence of the region with your post. Thank you. Also, glad you enjoyed Elizabeth Bell's tour. She is a great resource. She actually planned our trip last month. Her contacts/drivers etc were well informed and prompt.

omegaet, it is always interesting to read your postings. The Filadelfia Resort seems quite different from most of the other hotels I have read about in Antigua. I haven't quite figured out why the resort imported mules from Texas to use there in Guatemala.

Did I miss your comments on tasting their coffee? Was it the best coffee you have ever drank?

Must be fresh!

Is that you on the cable or are you taking the photo of some other brave soul?

Good post!

I didn't ask why the mules were imported from Texas....I do know their US coffee distribution office is located in Texas and apparently, the owner of the company has a ranch in Texas....maybe he raises mules there.

Re: COFFEE...As soon as our luggage was delivered to our suite, there was another knock on the door and we were greeted by a waiter carrying a tray with a Bodum Chambord 4 Cup French Press Coffee maker, already brewing. He pressed the handle (maybe it is called a plunger) and poured us each a "steaming" and very freshly brewed cup of their R. Dalton Estate Blend!

I don't know if it was the best coffee we've ever had, but it was probably brewed from the most freshly roasted coffee beans we've ever had.

btw....I like the taste of French Pressed coffee....but I hate to slurp up those fine grinds sometimes left in the bottom of the cup....just a matter of "practicing safe" slurping!

The coffee plantation tour starts from the "tourist side" of the Filadelfia Coffee Resort, where you board a Mercedes-Benz UNIMOG. These are sturdy vehicles (no longer produced) and have been used all over the world in rough terrain and difficult off-road situations.

We were picked up in the same type of vehicle when we ascended higher up the mountain to ride the zip lines.

The ride is a little "rough" but they seem capable of almost climbing a vertical wall....

Hey, omegaet, I like the looks of that UNIMOG. There were several days this past winter during several snow days, when I could have used one of those to drive to town. It would also problem come in handy to tow my boat I keep in Key Largo. Do they burn gas or diesel?

This is such an interesting looking place. I have never been to Guatemala, but if I were to go there, I would want to do things like this.

dani...if you do decide to travel to Guatemala, you certainly should consider spending some time in Antigua. Many interesting things to see and do. Even if you do not stay at The Filadelfia Coffee Resort, you would probably enjoy stopping by for a few hours and participating in one or more of the available activities.

Thank you for visiting my blog.

Too bad, looks like The Filadelfia in Antigua, Guatemala no longer participates with Luxury Link. Maybe they will return in the near future.

Wonder why this property was removed? Of course, it possible they decided not to renew for some reason. Looked interesting.

Well, looks like "slow tourism" and "reduced dining" budget finally nailed one of our favorite restaurants in Antigua http://www.nicolas.com.gt/

RIP Nicolas!

WOW.....we had considered visiting on our next trip. I had heard great reviews. Thanks for the update. Will probably go, again, to Maria's place, La Calle del Fonde. Great local food and great owner!
